Irazu Volcano: The
highest volcano in Costa Rica. There have been at
least 23 eruptions since 1723. The most recent was from
1963 to 1965. Beginning on the day US President John F.
Kennedy began a state visit to Costa Rica. The
volcano's summit has several craters, one of which
contains Diego de la Haya, a green crater lake of
variable depth. From the top it is claimed to be
possible to see both the Atlantic and Pacific
Oceans
.
Ujarras Ruins: Constructed in the 1560's, the
Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de la Limpia Concepcion sits
in ruins due to recurring floods and
earthquakes. Local lore says, a painting of the
Virgin was found in a box by a native Huetar Indian
fishermen who brought it to Ujarras, after which it
would not move. A church was then built on this site by
the locals to commemorate the Virgin. In 1666, it is
believed that the Virgin also helped to defeat British
pirates who had invaded the Caribbean
Coast. A magnificent example of Spanish
colonial architecture and the way of life at that time.
It now sits in a beautifully landscaped garden and
has been declared a national monument by the Costa Rican
government.
